Building worlds
What I do. 3-D visualization. A short film to knock your socks off, a slightly strange story about people who do good things for the right reasons.

This nine-minute piece took one day of filming and two years of post-production by Bruce Branit. Self-described as “a short film where a strange man uses a holo-world as a monument to the woman he loves“; it could also be called a story about giving some moments of relief to a loved one. Either way, it’s a moving piece.
The mind-to-holograph connection may be in the future, but the building technology is real. It is 3D construction software called SketchUp, developed by Brad Schell of @Last Software. A later feature allowed putting 3D models into Google Earth, and Google subsequently bought out the firm and its software.
Here’s a brief introduction to the software, and there are dozens of video tutorials that go into detail on the use. For anyone interested in learning, or if you have school kids that are, its a great way to do 3D modeling; easy and fast to learn.
There have been entire cities —real cities— modeled by it and present in Google Earth. Some are real cities of the past or archaeological ruins like Rome; and a person can virtually walk inside the the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto. It is the best visualization platform for urban planning; but I’d never envisioned this software used in the way this film-maker did.
When people ask what I do for a living, I can point them to this video.
